This month is #DiabetesAwarenessMonth, and on the 14th of November we mark #WorldDiabetesDay.
For millions of people with diabetes, daily life can be challenging. Every moment – at home, work, or school – needs extra care and planning. Living with diabetes means being resilient, organised, and responsible. It involves constant thought about food and self-care, where even simple tasks require many decisions. It can also lead to stigma and bullying, making it hard to stay hopeful. Without proper care, diabetes can become life-threatening.
Diabetes affects both physical and mental well-being. Yet, care often focuses only on blood sugar management. This leaves many feeling overwhelmed. This World Diabetes Day, let’s put well-being at the centre of diabetes care. We need to talk openly about the physical and mental strain and work for better support.
At Select Lifestyles, we recognise this need. That is why we offer an in-house Diabetes Awareness Course for all staff and clients affected by diabetes. This course covers the differences between type 1 and type 2, management strategies, recognising emergencies, and understanding complications. Our Training Manager, Wayne Phillips, a mental health first aider, leads the course. He provides extra support on coping mentally with diabetes.
Each year, we bring in an external nurse to check training compliance. This ensures that everyone trained remains competent. At Select Lifestyles, we are committed to supporting better care and understanding for those living with diabetes.
Diabetes.org.uk have provided useful guides for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. The guides offer key facts about staying healthy and how to live with diabetes.
