Black History Month (BHM) is a time to share, celebrate, and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture, not only in the UK but across the world.
Each year, there is a different focal theme, and this year, it’s #ReclaimingNarratives, which focuses on recognising and correcting the stories of Black history and culture. It is more than just a theme; it’s a movement to acknowledge and appreciate the many contributions of Black individuals throughout history.
We are proud to share and join in embracing, educating, and empowering people through the stories that shape our collective identity.
Introducing Abi…
Abiodun Okunnu, known as Abi, has been with Select Lifestyles for three years. She started as a support worker at Chester Road and quickly moved up to Deputy Manager. Her hard work led to her current role as Scheme Manager at Doveridge Place, and she now also oversees services at Hawbush Road and Oberon Grove.
Abi enjoys cooking, helping others, and spending time with her family. Her dedication to supporting others shows in her role, where she leads teams across several sites, working together to support clients.
One of Abi’s proudest achievements is her rapid progress from Deputy Manager to managing multiple services. She credits Select Lifestyles for building her confidence and providing growth opportunities. The company’s focus on staff development has been essential to her success.
Abi sees Select Lifestyles making real progress with diversity and inclusion. The company promotes a positive, inclusive environment with a diverse team and equality training. She believes a stronger mentorship program for Black employees would further support career growth.
While Abi has faced challenges, such as sometimes feeling seen as a threat because of her race, her resilience and commitment have helped her overcome these barriers.
For anyone considering a career at Select, Abi’s advice is to research the role and aim high. She has found Select Lifestyles to be a place of growth, with strong support from colleagues. Her journey from support worker to Scheme Manager shows the company’s commitment to helping staff reach their full potential.
