#ReclaimingNarratives: Dean’s Story

Black History Month (BHM) is a time to share, celebrate, and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture, not only in the UK but across the world.

Each year, there is a different focal theme, and this year, it’s #ReclaimingNarratives, which focuses on recognising and correcting the stories of Black history and culture. It is more than just a theme; it’s a movement to acknowledge and appreciate the many contributions of Black individuals throughout history.

We are proud to share and join in embracing, educating, and empowering people through the stories that shape our collective identity.

Introducing Dean…

Dean Martin is the Training Assistant at Select Lifestyles. He has been with the company for just over 14 months.

Dean has many interests, especially sports. He loves football, boxing, and MMA. Outside of sports, he enjoys caring for his two dogs: a lively French bulldog and a wise olde English bulldog. He likes to relax at the cinema, catch up on the news, or watch interesting documentaries. Right now, he is hooked on the Netflix series “Gangs of London.”

His time at the head office has been positive. Dean values the diverse environment, which makes him feel part of a community. He also appreciates the opportunities for job growth and education. These chances motivate him to keep improving. Team-building events, like the Wolf Run and shared lunches, have helped him form lasting friendships with his colleagues.

Since joining Select Lifestyles, Dean has grown a lot, especially in his communication skills and self-confidence. He earned an award in first aid and life support, showing his commitment to training his colleagues. He is also studying to become a mentor and teacher, which highlights his dedication to helping others.

Select Lifestyles provides Dean with many learning opportunities and networking at care shows. Support from experienced colleagues has helped him grow. For those thinking about joining Select Lifestyles, Dean suggests doing thorough research. The team is full of caring and driven people. Although the adjustment period can be challenging, the rewards are worth it. Dean enjoys working with a great group of colleagues.

He describes the head office as cultured, professional, and friendly. Overall, Dean finds his experience at Select Lifestyles rewarding and informative. He sees that the company supports diversity and inclusion. However, he believes that more recognition for the achievements of Black employees would strengthen a sense of belonging.

At first, Dean struggled to adjust to the pace of work. However, he eventually found his footing and exceeded his own expectations. To improve inclusivity, he suggests more support for sponsorships within the organisation. Outside of work, Dean believes that hard work and determination are key to success. He agrees with comedian Kevin Hart: “Hard work and determination equal success. Nothing comes easy. Put your mind to something.” This motto reflects Dean’s journey and inspires others in their careers.
